Human stem cell factor (SCF) is an early-acting cytokine that plays a pivotal role in regulating embryonic and adult hematopoiesis. STEMCELL Technologies supplies this animal component–free recombinant human SCF, which is expressed in E. coli and lyophilized from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing sodium phosphate and sodium chloride at pH 7.5. The protein has a purity of ≥ 97%.

The specific activity is ≥ 6.7 x 10^4 units/mg, with an EC50 ≤ 15 ng/mL, as determined by a cell proliferation assay using TF-1 cells. Endotoxin is ≤ 0.1 EU/μg protein by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. SCF acts on cells at multiple levels of the hematopoietic hierarchy, supporting survival, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and functional activation, and is commonly combined with cytokines such as thrombopoietin and Flt3/Flk-2 Ligand to expand primitive hematopoietic stem and multi-potent progenitor cells in culture. For storage, keep the lyophilized material at -20 to -80°C, where it remains stable for 12 months from the date of receipt. Centrifuge the vial before opening and reconstitute in sterile water to at least 0.1 mg/mL by pipetting the solution down the sides of the vial without vortexing. The Safety Data Sheet classifies the material as not hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, and it is not regulated for transport by DOT, TDG, MEX, ICAO, IATA, IMDG, RID, ADR, or ADN.
