Stem cell factor (SCF) is an early-acting cytokine that plays a pivotal role in the regulation of embryonic and adult hematopoiesis, promoting cell survival, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and functional activation of cells at multiple levels of the hematopoietic hierarchy. This human recombinant SCF from STEMCELL Technologies is commonly used with thrombopoietin and Flt3/Flk-2 Ligand to promote expansion of primitive hematopoietic stem cells and multi-potent progenitor cells in culture, and acts in synergy with growth factors such as IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, IL-7, G-CSF, and erythropoietin to support proliferation and differentiation of myeloid and erythroid progenitor cells. SCF is also a primary growth and activation factor for mast cells and eosinophils, exists in two biologically active splice forms (a soluble and a transmembrane isoform), and signals through the c-Kit tyrosine kinase receptor (CD117) to activate the PI3K, JAK/STAT, and MAPK pathways.

The product is supplied lyophilized in a sterile filtered aqueous solution containing acetic acid, is expressed in E. coli with a purity of ≥ 95%, a predicted molecular mass of 18.6 kDa (accession P21583), and cross-reactivity described as weakly active on mouse cells. Specific activity is ≥ 6.6 x 10^4 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 15 ng/mL) as determined by a cell proliferation assay using TF-1 cells, and the endotoxin level is ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. The vial should be stored at -20°C to -80°C and is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt.
