The growth factor mediates proliferation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells and supports differentiation of hPSC-derived neural progenitors into oligodendrocyte precursor cells, and is relevant to workflows using serum-free neurophysiological basal medium for improved neuronal function. Biological activity is assessed by the ability of the protein to promote proliferation of BALB/c 3T3 cells, with proliferation measured after 46 hours using a fluorometric assay; the EC50, defined as the effective concentration at which proliferation is at 50% of maximum, is less than 21 ng/mL in the example shown. The protein is a homodimer of 14.4 kDa subunits with a predicted total molecular mass of 28.9 kDa, as demonstrated by SDS-PAGE analysis of 1 μg of product under reducing and non-reducing conditions visualised by Coomassie Blue staining.
