LIF is described by the manufacturer as playing a role in implantation by regulating proliferation, invasion, and differentiation of trophoblast following blastocyst attachment. The biological activity of Human Recombinant LIF was assessed by its ability to promote proliferation of TF-1 cells, measured using a fluorometric assay method; the EC50 is defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation is at 50% of maximum, and was determined to be 0.09 ng/mL. The protein has a predicted molecular mass of 19.7 kDa, verified by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions and visualized with Coomassie Blue staining. In published research applications, Human Recombinant LIF has been used in combination with OCT4, KLF4, KLF2, CHIR99021, and PD0325901 to promote reprogramming of human embryonic stem cells to a naïve state, or to maintain them in that state.

The Safety Data Sheet recommends storing the product in tightly closed containers in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place.
