Hu Recom IL-5, 10 µg

A human recombinant cytokine from STEMCELL Technologies, this Interleukin-5 (IL-5) protein is a member of the short-chain 4-α-helical bundle subset of hematopoietic cytokines. It binds to a receptor composed of IL-5Ra and a common beta chain that is shared with the receptors for IL-3 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), activating the JAK/STAT and MAPK pathways upon binding.

IL-5 is produced by Th2 cells, eosinophils, and activated mast cells. It functions in the recruitment, activation, proliferation, and survival of eosinophils, playing an important role in allergic inflammation, asthma, and parasite immunity. Stimulation of eosinophils with IL-5 leads to their activation, upregulation of CD11b expression, and inhibition of apoptosis. Alternative names for IL-5 include B cell differentiation factor II (BCDFII), Eosinophil differentiation factor (EDF), Interleukin-5, and TFR.

Expressed in E. coli and supplied lyophilized from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing sodium glycinate at pH 8.5, the protein has a predicted total molecular mass of 26.6 kDa and forms a homodimer of 13.3 kDa subunits (Accession P05113). Specific activity is ≥ 4 x 10^6 units/mg, with an EC50 ≤ 0.25 ng/mL determined by a cell proliferation assay using TF-1 cells; in a representative assay the EC50 was 0.13 - 0.2 ng/mL. Purity is ≥ 95%, and endotoxin level is ≤ 1 EU/μg protein by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. Reconstitute in sterile water to at least 0.1 mg/mL by pipetting the solution down the sides of the vial (do not vortex). Store at -20°C to -80°C; the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt.
