Description

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a monomeric cytokine originally identified as a T cell growth factor that binds to heterotrimeric receptors consisting of CD25, CD122, and CD132. Upon binding, it activates JAK3-, STAT5-, and AKT-dependent signaling pathways, resulting in cellular proliferation and survival. The majority of IL-2 is secreted by activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, though B cells and dendritic cells also produce it in small amounts.

Offered by STEMCELL Technologies, this Human Recombinant IL-2 (E. coli-expressed) carries the alternative names Aldesleukin, Interleukin2, T cell growth factor, and TCGF. It is lyophilized from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid and has a predicted molecular mass of 15.5 kDa. Purity is ≥ 97%. The specific activity is ≥ 3.33 x 10^5 units/mg, with an EC50 ≤ 3 ng/mL in a cell proliferation assay using CTLL-2 cells (a representative dataset showed an EC50 of 1.99 ng/mL). Endotoxin levels are ≤ 0.1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis.

IL-2 downregulates immune responses to prevent autoimmunity during thymic development, influences the development of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells, affects the development of follicular helper T cells, and controls inflammation by inhibiting Th17 differentiation. High serum IL-2 levels have been associated with progression of scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and gastric and non-small cell lung cancer. The product is intended for research use only and not for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic applications.
