Description

A laboratory reagent supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, this recombinant human Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a cytokine important in type 2 immune responses. It is expressed by T helper type 2 (Th2) cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). The cytokine signals through a receptor composed of IL-4Rα and IL-13Rα1 or IL-13Rα2, which is found on B cells, basophils, eosinophils, mast cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, monocytes, macrophages, respiratory epithelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. On B cells, IL-13 promotes proliferation, induces class switching to IgG4 and IgE, and supports the recruitment and activation of IgE-producing B cells.

Signaling through this receptor activates the JAK/STAT and IRS-1/IRS-2 pathways. In vivo, IL-13 contributes to resistance to extracellular helminth parasites by regulating gastrointestinal parasite expulsion, and also plays a role in airway hyperresponsiveness, allergic inflammation, tissue remodeling, tumor cell growth, and fibrosis. Human IL-13 is not species-specific but shows greater activity on human cells compared to mouse cells. This product is a variant of wild-type IL-13.

The lyophilized protein is produced in E. coli and supplied as a sterile-filtered solution containing sodium citrate at pH 3. The polypeptide is composed of 112 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 12.6 kDa. Purity is ≥ 95%, specific activity is ≥ 2 x 10^5 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 5 ng/mL) as determined by a TF-1 cell proliferation assay, and endotoxin level is ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. According to the manufacturer's safety data sheet, the product is not classified as hazardous under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) or the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. Store at -20 to -80°C; the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt.
