IL-1 alpha is described as a factor that recruits infiltrating cells to a site of injury during necrosis and plays an important role in processes of sterile inflammation. Biological activity of the recombinant protein has been demonstrated by its ability to promote the proliferation of D10S cells, with proliferation measured after 42 hours using a fluorometric assay method; in the cited example, the EC50 — defined as the effective concentration at which cell proliferation reaches 50% of maximum — is 0.68 pg/mL. The protein has also been characterized by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions, with visualization by Coomassie Blue staining.
