Description

Supplied by STEMCELL Technologies as a solid powder for use as a laboratory reagent, this preparation provides recombinant human Interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α), a member of the IL-1 family that functions as a dual-function cytokine. Both the unprocessed precursor and the processed IL-1α protein signal through IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1R1). High intracellular levels of the IL-1α precursor are found in keratinocytes, thymic epithelium, hepatocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and the epithelial cells of mucous membranes, and the precursor is also expressed on the surface of monocytes and B lymphocytes.

Biological roles of IL-1α include the recruitment of infiltrating cells to sites of injury during necrosis and a contribution to processes of sterile inflammation. The cytokine also contributes to angiogenesis during hypoxia, and in murine studies it is produced by microglia-like cells after ischemic brain injury, where it contributes to inflammation.

Product characterization comprises SDS-PAGE analysis under reducing and non-reducing conditions with visualization by Coomassie Blue staining, alongside a cell-based bioactivity assay that measures the proliferation of D10S cells. Proliferation is quantified after 42 hours using a fluorometric assay method. The EC50 is defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation is at 50% of maximum and was determined to be 0.68 pg/mL. The material is not classified as hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) or the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), is for research use only and not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses, and should be stored with containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. It is positioned for research workflows involving primary human cells.
