Description

Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), also known as type II interferon, is a cytokine produced by T and NK cells, and in smaller amounts by dendritic cells and macrophages. Its production is controlled by cytokines such as IL-12 and IL-18 released in response to infection. IFN-γ binds to a receptor complex and initiates signal transduction through the JAK/STAT pathway, culminating in the transcription and activation of genes that control a diverse array of immunological functions.

This cytokine stimulates the antimicrobial and anti-tumor activity of macrophages, NK cells, and neutrophils by promoting the activation of microbial effector mechanisms including production of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide intermediates, and complement. IFN-γ enhances expression of major histocompatibility complex class I and II in dendritic cells and mononuclear phagocytes, stimulates survival and growth in B cells, and favors the development of Th1 versus Th2 cells.

The STEMCELL Technologies animal component-free Human Recombinant IFN-gamma is produced in E. coli with a predicted molecular mass of 16.9 kDa. The lyophilized product is formulated in a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing sodium phosphate, trehalose, mannitol, and TWEEN 80 at pH 6.5. Specific activity is ≥ 3.3 x 10^6 units/mg (≤ 0.3 ng/mL), as determined by the ability to induce cytotoxicity of HT-29 cells. Purity is ≥ 95%, and endotoxin level is ≤ 0.1 EU/μg protein. The product should be stored at -20 to -80°C and is stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt.
