A recombinant human protein from STEMCELL Technologies supports the survival and differentiation of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and promotes maturation of human PSC-derived neural progenitor cells into neurons. The product is intended for research applications including neural and pancreatic differentiation of mouse and human ES and iPS cells.

Biological activity was demonstrated by the ability of the protein to promote proliferation of C6 cells. Cell proliferation was measured after 7 days of culture using a fluorometric assay method, with the EC50 defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation is at 50% of maximum; the EC50 in the cited example was 2.17 μg/mL. Characterization by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions, visualized by Coomassie Blue staining, shows the protein is a homodimer of 15.2 kDa subunits with a predicted total molecular mass of 30.4 kDa.

The product is supplied as a solid and is not classified as hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) or as a hazardous substance or mixture according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). It is stable under normal conditions, with 0% of the mixture consisting of ingredient(s) of unknown toxicity.
