Description

Manufactured by STEMCELL Technologies, Human Recombinant GDF-5 is a research-grade cytokine supplied as a lyophilized powder from a sterile filtered aqueous solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid. Growth differentiation factor 5 (GDF-5) is a member of the bone morphogenic protein (BMP) subclass of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily, with alternative names including BMP-14, Bone morphogenic protein 14, and CDMP-1. The protein is produced in E. coli and is reported at ≥ 95% purity, with a predicted molecular mass of 13.7 kDa for the monomer and 27.4 kDa for the dimer (UniProt accession P43026).

GDF-5 binds a receptor complex comprising BMPR1B and BMPR2, activating SMAD signaling. It enhances chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, skeletogenesis, and dendrite growth during development. In rat studies, GDF-5 has been reported to regulate patterning, neurogenesis, astrogliogenesis, and neuronal specification. Biological activity is determined by alkaline phosphatase activity induced in ATDC-5 cells, with a specific activity of ≥ 8.3 x 10^2 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 1.2 μg/mL); a representative assay yielded an EC50 of 0.017 μg/mL. The product is not classified as a hazardous substance or mixture according to GHS, and transport is not regulated under DOT, TDG, IATA, or IMDG.

The endotoxin level is ≤ 1.0 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. The product is intended for research use only and is not for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic applications. Reconstitution guidance calls for centrifuging the vial before opening and resuspending in sterile water containing 0.1% BSA to at least 0.1 mg/mL; BSA is not required if the reconstituted product will be used immediately. Storage is at -20°C to -80°C, with the lyophilized material stable for 12 months from the date of receipt. After reconstitution, the product can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 month, or at -20°C to -80°C for up to 3 months, avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
