Description

A pleiotropic member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family, this recombinant human protein from STEMCELL Technologies is a heparin-dependent regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation. The growth factor signals by binding FGFR3 (IIIb) and the IIIc splice variants of the FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3 receptors. In mice, deletion of FGF-9 is lethal, and its expression affects development of the skeleton, cerebellum, lungs, heart, vascular system, digestive tract, and testes. Altered levels of FGF-9 have also been reported in various types of human cancers.

Also known by the alternative names GAF, Glia-activating factor, and HBGF-9, the protein has a predicted molecular mass of 23.4 kDa (accession number P31371) and is reported to be species-specific in its cross-reactivity. Biological activity was tested by its ability to promote the proliferation of 3T3 cells, with an EC50 of less than 2 ng/mL and a specific activity of ≥ 5 x 10^5 units/mg. The product is supplied as a lyophilized powder (dialyzed against phosphate-buffered saline) at ≥ 95% purity, expressed in E. coli, with an endotoxin level of ≤ 0.2 EU/μg protein. For storage, the vial should be kept at -80°C, where it remains stable for 12 months from the date of receipt.
