FGF-8B is described by the manufacturer as a regulator of gastrulation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and the later transition from mesenchymal to epithelial differentiation during embryonic development. Biological activity of the recombinant protein was demonstrated by its ability to promote proliferation of BALB/c 3T3 cells, measured using a fluorometric assay. The EC50 is defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation reaches 50% of maximum, reported as 1.8 ng/mL in the example assay. The protein has a predicted molecular mass of 22.5 kDa, and 2 μg was resolved by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions and visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.
