A recombinant growth factor from STEMCELL Technologies, fibroblast growth factor 8A (FGF-8A) is an isoform of FGF-8 that binds the FGF receptor and activates Ras/MAPK signaling, leading to cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and apoptosis. FGF-8A is one of four human isoforms produced by alternative splicing of FGF-8 RNA, and studies in zebrafish and Xenopus indicate it is required for endoderm morphogenesis and neurogenesis.

The lyophilized product is derived from E. coli and is formulated by dialysis against phosphate-buffered saline. It is supplied with a predicted molecular mass of 21.3 kDa and a purity of ≥ 95%. The specific activity is ≥ 2 × 10^3 units/mg, with an EC50 ≤ 500 ng/mL, as determined by a cell proliferation assay using 3T3 cells in the presence of 1 μg/mL of heparin. Endotoxin level is ≤ 0.2 EU/μg protein, measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. Quality is demonstrated by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.

According to the accompanying Safety Data Sheet, the product is classified as not a hazardous substance or mixture under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and is stable under recommended transport and storage conditions. The recommended storage temperature is -80°C, where the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from the date of receipt. Users are advised to centrifuge the vial before opening and to resuspend in sterile water to at least 0.1 mg/mL without vortexing.
