Description

A recombinant form of Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP-4) is offered by STEMCELL Technologies. BMP-4 is a member of the highly conserved transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily. The mature protein is a disulfide-linked homodimer consisting of two 116-amino-acid residue subunits, generated by proteolytic removal of the signal peptide and propeptides.

It binds to type I and type II receptors on cells. This binding triggers phosphorylation of receptor 1, which in turn leads to phosphorylation of Smad proteins that act as transcription factors. BMPs are key regulators of embryogenesis and play a role in the growth and differentiation of various cell types, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), mesenchymal cells, epithelial cells, hematopoietic cells, and neuronal cells.

The human protein is also known by the alternative names BMP-2B, BMP2B1, MCOPS6, OFC11, and ZYME, with UniProt accession number P12644. The product is expressed in CHO cells, lyophilized from a sterile-filtered solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid, and supplied as a powder. Specifications include purity ≥ 95%, specific activity ≥ 6.7 x 10^4 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 15 ng/mL) as determined by alkaline phosphatase activity induced in ATDC-5 cells, and endotoxin level ≤ 1 EU/μg protein measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. Store at -20 to -80°C; stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt. Products are for research use only and not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses unless otherwise stated.
