Manufactured by STEMCELL Technologies, this animal component-free recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), also known as FGF-β, FGF2, or HBGF-2 (UniProt accession P09038), is a prototypic member of the FGF family. FGF family cytokines possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities and are involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and apoptosis. bFGF has a β-trefoil structure, binds to the four FGF receptor (FGFR) family members, and activates JAK/STAT, PI3K, ERK1/2, and other receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling pathways.

The full-length bFGF protein is encoded by the human FGF2 gene and consists of 154 amino acid residues. It supports the maintenance of undifferentiated human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), stimulates hPSCs to form neural rosettes, improves proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells, and enhances chondrogenic differentiation. The product is expressed in E. coli.

Specifications include a specific activity of ≥ 2.0 x 10^6 units/mg (EC50 ≤ 0.5 ng/mL) as determined by a cell proliferation assay using NR6R-3T3 cells, endotoxin level ≤ 0.1 EU/μg protein by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis, and purity ≥ 95%. The product is lyophilized from a sterile-filtered aqueous solution containing sodium phosphate and sodium chloride at pH 7.5. Store at -20°C to -80°C; stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt.
