Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) regulates synaptic transmission and plasticity at adult synapses in the central nervous system and contributes to adaptive neuronal responses. STEMCELL Technologies supplies this animal component-free recombinant human BDNF for laboratory research.

Biological activity was confirmed by the protein's ability to promote proliferation of a neuroblastoma cell line stably expressing TrkB (BR6), measured using a colorimetric assay method, yielding an EC50 of 5 ng/mL. Analytical characterisation by SDS-PAGE under reducing (+) and non-reducing (−) conditions with Coomassie Blue staining shows the product is a homodimer of 13.6 kDa subunits with a predicted molecular mass of 27.3 kDa.

The product is intended for research applications including the neural and pancreatic differentiation of mouse and human ES and iPS cells.
