Biological activity is determined by the protein's ability to promote proliferation of BALB/c 3T3 cells, quantified using a fluorometric assay. The EC50, defined as the effective concentration at which cell proliferation is at 50% of maximum, is less than 0.2 ng/mL in the cited example. Sample integrity is demonstrated by resolving 2 μg of the recombinant protein with SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions, with bands visualized by Coomassie Blue staining.
