Description

This animal component‑free recombinant protein from STEMCELL Technologies is human/mouse Growth Differentiation Factor 11 (GDF‑11), a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF‑β) family. GDF‑11 binds the TGF‑β receptors ALK4, ALK5, and ALK7 and activates the SMAD signalling pathway. It regulates the development of the olfactory system, retina, and pancreas, as well as anterior/posterior patterning of the axial skeleton, and is expressed in skeletal muscle, brain, and dental pulp. Studies in mice have shown that GDF‑11 regulates muscle and cardiac ageing and stimulates neurogenesis by remodelling blood vessels. Alternative names include BMP‑11 and Bone morphogenetic protein 11 (UniProt accession O95390).

The protein is produced in E. coli and supplied as a lyophilised preparation from a sterile‑filtered solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid, with a predicted molecular mass of 12.5 kDa (monomer) and 24.9 kDa (dimer). Specific activity is ≥ 1.0 × 10^4 units/mg, with an EC50 ≤ 100 ng/mL as determined by an alkaline phosphatase activity assay using ATDC‑5 cells. Purity is ≥ 95%, and the endotoxin level is ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis.

The lyophilised product should be stored at ‑20°C to ‑80°C and is stable for 12 months from the date of receipt. Before opening, the vial should be centrifuged and the product reconstituted in 10 mM hydrochloric acid to at least 0.1 mg/mL. The product is for research use only and is not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses.
