Activins are regulatory proteins that influence cell proliferation, differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis, and metabolism. The biological activity of this STEMCELL Technologies recombinant protein was demonstrated by its ability to inhibit proliferation of MPC-11 cells. Cell proliferation inhibition was measured after 66 hours of culture using a fluorometric assay, with the EC50 — defined as the effective concentration of the growth factor at which cell proliferation inhibition is at 50% of maximum — recorded as 0.436 ng/mL in the cited example. Purity was assessed by resolving the protein with SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions, followed by Coomassie Blue staining.

According to the manufacturer's safety data sheet, the product is supplied as a solid powder. It is not considered hazardous under the 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) and is not classified as a hazardous substance or mixture according to the Globally Harmonized System. The material is stable under normal conditions, and no special protective equipment is required for eye, skin, or respiratory protection under typical use.
