Description

STEMCELL Technologies supplies Human/Mouse Recombinant Activin A, a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) family of proteins produced by many cell types throughout development. The protein is a disulfide-linked homodimer of two beta-A chains that binds to heteromeric complexes of a type I (Act RI-A and Act RI-B) and a type II (Act RII-A and Act RII-B) serine-threonine kinase receptor. Activins primarily signal through SMAD2/3 proteins to regulate a variety of functions, including cell proliferation, differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis, and metabolism. Activin A maintains the undifferentiated state of human embryonic stem cells and also facilitates differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into definitive endoderm.

Recombinant Activin A is expressed in E. coli and lyophilized from a sterile-filtered solution containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid. The protein has a predicted molecular mass of 26.2 kDa (13.1 kDa monomer), and is supplied at ≥ 95% purity with an endotoxin level of ≤ 1 EU/μg protein as measured by kinetic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) analysis. Biological activity is determined by the ability to induce cytotoxicity of MPC-11 cells, with the EC50 in the cited example being 1.9 - 2.9 ng/mL. The product is intended for use with human and mouse systems, and alternative names include Activin beta-A chain, EDF, Erythroid differentiation protein, FRP, FSH-releasing protein, INHBA, Inhibin beta-A chain, and Inhibin beta-1. The product is for research use only and is not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses.
