Description

Supplied by STEMCELL Technologies, the small molecule EC23 is a pan-retinoic acid receptor (RAR) agonist reported to induce neural differentiation. The compound is described as a retinoid pathway activator and engages RARα, RARβ, and RARγ with reported EC₅₀ values of 41 nM, 0.5 nM, and 0.4 nM respectively, while showing no appreciable activity at retinoid X receptors (EC₅₀ > 10 µM for all subtypes). EC23 is a photostable synthetic analog of All-Trans Retinoic Acid (ATRA) and has also been reported to weakly activate aryl hydrocarbon receptors.

Published applications include induction of neural differentiation in human pluripotent stem cells, similarly to ATRA, and promotion of neuronal differentiation in the human fetal neural progenitor cell line ReNcell VM. The product is provided as a crystalline solid with a reported purity of ≥ 98% and is stable for 12 months from the date of receipt when stored at ≤ 20 °C and protected from prolonged exposure to light. Reported solubility is ≤ 15 mM in DMSO and ≤ 3 mM in absolute ethanol, with low solubility in aqueous media. For cell culture work, stock solutions should be diluted into culture medium immediately before use, and final DMSO concentration should be kept below 0.1% to avoid potential cell toxicity.
