Description

A research-use small molecule from STEMCELL Technologies, clozapine N-oxide (CNO) is an inactive metabolite of clozapine and an activator of designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs). In mice the compound is converted back to the parent compound clozapine, and it can activate G protein-coupled receptor activities that govern behavior, perceptions, and motor functions. Clozapine itself is administered as an antipsychotic and has shown efficacy in reducing cognitive and psychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's patients.

The product is a crystalline solid with a stated purity of ≥ 98%. Its chemical name is 8-chloro-11-(4-methyl-4-oxido-1-piperazinyl)-5H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazepine, with the molecular formula C18H19ClN4O and a molecular weight of 342.8 g/mol. Storage guidance is -20 °C as supplied, protected from prolonged exposure to light and stored with a desiccant for long-term storage; the product is stable as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt. Reported solubility is ≤ 40 mM in DMSO and ≤ 8.7 mM in absolute ethanol, with low solubility in aqueous media.

The Safety Data Sheet classifies the substance as acutely toxic by oral exposure (Category 3) and fatal by dermal contact or inhalation of dusts/mists (Category 1 for each), with serious eye irritation and single-exposure target organ toxicity (respiratory irritation) also classified. Hazard statements include "Toxic if swallowed," "Fatal in contact with skin," "Fatal if inhaled," "Causes serious eye irritation," and "May cause respiratory irritation." Recommended precautions call for working in a well-ventilated area, avoiding contact with skin, eyes, and clothing, and wearing appropriate respiratory, glove, and eye protection. The chemical is stable under normal conditions and is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
