A whole-mount histology reagent from STEMCELL Technologies, prepared from carminic acid complexed with aluminum potassium sulfate. The 100 mL working solution produces the characteristic deep red to pink coloration used to highlight developing vertebrate tissues, cartilage primordia, and notochord architecture under a dissecting microscope.

Carmine Alum is the classical stain embryologists apply to chick embryo whole mounts, zebrafish larvae, Xenopus embryos, and other fixed vertebrate specimens to visualize early skeletal patterning during organogenesis. Anatomy teaching labs rely on it for cleared specimen demonstrations where methyl salicylate or benzyl benzoate serves as the clearing agent, with fixed samples typically immersed for several hours up to overnight and then differentiated in acid alcohol before dehydration and clearing.

The aqueous formulation is ready to use in a 100 mL bottle sized for repeated classroom and research use, remaining stable at room temperature when stored protected from direct light. A single bottle supports the throughput needs of an active developmental biology teaching program or a moderate-volume whole-mount imaging workflow.
