Description

An alkylating antineoplastic agent, this chemotherapeutic agent from STEMCELL Technologies acts as an alkyl sulfonate that forms interstrand crosslinks between the DNA bases guanine and adenine and between guanine and guanine. DNA breakage induced by busulfan-mediated DNA crosslinking induces senescence in cells.

The product is supplied as a crystalline solid with a chemical formula of C6H14O6S2, a molecular weight of 246.3 g/mol, and a purity of ≥ 98%. Its chemical name is 1,4-dimethanesulfonate 1,4-butanediol, and its CAS number is 55-98-1. Alternative names include Busulphan, Mielosan, Milecitan, Myeloleukon, Mylecytan, Myleran, NCI C01592, and NSC 750. The product is stable at -20°C as supplied for 12 months from date of receipt; as a precaution, STEMCELL recommends storing all small molecules away from direct light, and for long-term storage, storing with a desiccant. Solubility in DMSO is ≤ 65 mM.

In published cancer research applications, busulfan has been shown to induce senescence through bypassing the p53-p21 (Cip1/Waf1) pathway in murine bone marrow hematopoietic cells, to induce senescence of WI38 fibroblasts in vitro through ERK-P38 pathways, and to inhibit the growth and viability of osteosarcoma cells (U2OS and MG63) in vitro and in orthotopic implants in mice. Products are for research use only and not intended for human or animal diagnostic or therapeutic uses unless otherwise stated.
