ZBTB16 is a BTB/POZ-domain zinc finger protein best characterized in the literature as a transcriptional repressor that recruits chromatin-modifying complexes to specific genomic targets. It is required for the development and function of several immune cell populations — most prominently NKT cells, where it establishes the innate-like effector program, and for hematopoietic stem cell maintenance — and it acts as a fusion partner with RARA in a subset of acute promyelocytic leukemia cases. Studies of spermatogonial stem cells, limb morphogenesis, and chromatin-based gene silencing routinely use PLZF immunostaining to follow endogenous expression patterns in tissue sections and whole-cell lysates.
