Synaptophysin (SYP) is a 38 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein found in the membranes of presynaptic vesicles in neurons and in the analogous vesicles of neuroendocrine cells, making it one of the most widely used immunohistochemical markers in neurobiology and tumor pathology. The Antibodies.com rabbit polyclonal reagent binds this target in samples from human, mouse, and rat, and is supplied as 100 µL of unconjugated antiserum that can be paired with HRP, biotin, or fluorophore-conjugated secondary reagents depending on the chosen detection platform.

Validated applications include Western blot, where the antibody reveals the expected ~38 kDa band in brain and neuroendocrine cell lysates; immunohistochemistry on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections for mapping synaptic terminals and identifying neuroendocrine differentiation in tumor specimens; and ELISA for quantitative work in research samples. Because the reagent is polyclonal, it recognizes multiple epitopes on SYP, supporting consistent detection across all three reactive species.

Researchers use this antibody to investigate synaptic plasticity, neuronal development, neurodegenerative disease models, and the neuroendocrine phenotype of carcinomas including small cell lung cancer and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, where SYP expression is a key diagnostic feature. The unconjugated format gives laboratories flexibility to optimize label, dilution, and detection chemistry for each application.
