SSX5 is an X-linked member of the KRAB-containing SSX family of transcriptional repressors, mapping to cytogenetic position Xp11.23 and encoding a 188-amino acid protein that shares roughly 80% sequence identity with the related SSX1, SSX2, SSX3, and SSX4 gene products. In normal tissue its expression is essentially restricted to the testis, classifying it as a cancer-testis antigen; reactivation has been documented in synovial sarcoma, melanoma cell lines, and several other tumor types where its immunogenicity makes it a candidate target for vaccine and T-cell receptor-based immunotherapy studies.
