Smoothelin (SMTN) is a cytoskeletal protein selectively expressed in terminally differentiated, contractile smooth muscle cells, making this rabbit polyclonal reagent from Antibodies.com a widely used marker for distinguishing mature smooth muscle from synthetic or proliferative phenotypes in research settings. The unconjugated antibody is supplied in a 100 µl vial at 1 mg/ml in PBS with 0.1% sodium azide and 50% glycerol, with storage at -20 °C recommended to preserve activity across the shelf life. Validated for western blot and immunohistochemistry on human and mouse samples, the antibody supports in vitro and tissue-based studies. In vascular biology, SMTN staining is applied to arterial cross-sections to characterize smooth muscle differentiation during vessel remodeling and atherosclerotic plaque development. Cancer researchers use the antibody to assess smoothelin loss in gastrointestinal, bladder, and soft tissue tumors, where reduced expression often correlates with tumor progression and dedifferentiation. Developmental and gastrointestinal studies employ it to delineate the muscularis propria and other muscular layers of the intestine and hollow organs, while reproductive and urological research applies SMTN labeling to characterize uterine myometrium and bladder smooth muscle architecture. Combined with other lineage markers in cell culture, the antibody supports investigations of smooth muscle phenotype switching relevant to fibrotic and vascular disease models.
