S100B is a calcium-binding protein of the EF-hand family expressed predominantly by astrocytes in the central nervous system and by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. This polyclonal antibody from Antibodies.com is raised in rabbit and supplied at 1 mg/ml in PBS containing 0.1% sodium azide with 50% glycerol, calibrated for Western blot and immunohistochemistry applications in human, mouse, and rat samples.

S100B regulates intracellular calcium homeostasis, cytoskeletal dynamics, and cell proliferation, and acts extracellularly through RAGE receptors to modulate neuronal survival and microglial activation. Because protein levels rise after astrocytic injury, S100B is widely studied as a serum and CSF biomarker in traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and neurodegenerative disease research, and is also a recognized marker for melanoma and schwannoma tumor pathology.

The antibody is provided in a 100 µl vial as a liquid stock ready for dilution into standard assay buffers. Common workflows include immunoblotting of cell and tissue lysates to resolve monomeric and dimeric forms of the protein, and immunohistochemistry on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections to localize glial and tumor cell populations.
