Mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK2) catalyzes the GTP-dependent conversion of oxaloacetate to phosphoenolpyruvate, the rate-controlling step of gluconeogenesis. Published work has highlighted its contribution to glyceroneogenesis and to the metabolic adaptation that allows certain cancer cells to support biosynthesis when glucose is limiting.
