NPHS1 encodes nephrin, a transmembrane adhesion protein localized to the slit diaphragm between podocyte foot processes in the renal glomerulus. Mutations in this gene cause congenital nephrotic syndrome of the Finnish type, and altered expression contributes to acquired proteinuric conditions, making antibodies to nephrin valuable tools for studying glomerular filtration biology.
