The protein also plays an essential role during neuronal migration in cortical development, and loss-of-function mutations in NDE1 cause severe brain malformations including microlissencephaly. Altered NDE1 expression has additionally been implicated in schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders, making the protein a frequent subject of neuroscience and cell biology research.
