MSK1, also known as RPS6KA5, is a nuclear serine/threonine kinase activated downstream of the ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK cascades. The kinase phosphorylates chromatin substrates such as histone H3 at Ser10 and transcription factors including CREB and ATF1, coupling stress and mitogenic signals to chromatin remodeling and immediate-early gene transcription.
