This polyclonal antibody from Antibodies.com targets MRP-L21 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L21), a component of the large 39S subunit of the human mitochondrial ribosome that participates in intra-mitochondrial protein synthesis. Raised in rabbit and supplied as 100 µl of unconjugated antiserum, the reagent is validated for Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA workflows and cross-reacts with both human and mouse samples, supporting comparative work across species.

MRP-L21 is encoded by the nuclear MRPL21 gene and is imported from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix, where it assembles with 28S small subunit proteins and a mitochondrial 12S rRNA to form the 55S monosome. Loss-of-function studies have linked reduced MRP-L21 levels to impaired oxidative phosphorylation, and the antibody is therefore commonly used to assess mitochondrial ribosomal integrity in patient-derived fibroblasts, transmitochondrial cybrid lines, and gene-edited cell models.

For Western blot applications, the antibody detects a band near the expected ~23 kDa molecular weight of MRP-L21 in whole-cell and mitochondrial-enriched lysates. For IHC, it produces cytoplasmic granular staining consistent with mitochondrial distribution in fixed tissue sections. The vial should be stored frozen in single-use aliquots to limit freeze-thaw degradation, and the reagent is supplied for research use only.
