MMP-8 (matrix metalloproteinase-8), also known as neutrophil collagenase or PMNL collagenase, is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that preferentially cleaves triple-helical fibrillar collagens — primarily types I, II, and III — at a characteristic Gly-Leu or Gly-Ile bond within the collagen triple helix. The proenzyme is stored in the specific (secondary) granules of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and is rapidly secreted during degranulation at sites of acute inflammation, driving extracellular matrix turnover, leukocyte migration, and tissue remodeling.
