The polyclonal antibody from Antibodies.com targets myelin basic protein (MBP), a ~18.5 kDa structural component of compact myelin that is expressed by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Raised in rabbit, this unconjugated reagent is supplied as 100 µl of a 1 mg/ml stock in PBS containing 0.1% sodium azide and 50% glycerol, a formulation that keeps the antibody liquid at working temperatures while remaining stable during longer freezer storage.

Validated for western blot and immunohistochemistry, the reagent detects MBP across human, mouse, and rat samples, supporting studies of myelination, demyelinating disease models such as multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, remyelination research, and characterization of glial cell differentiation in culture. The polyclonal format offers recognition of multiple epitopes along the MBP primary sequence, which can be useful when probing splice isoforms or partially degraded fragments recovered from tissue lysates.

For western blot, typical working concentrations sit in the 0.1–1 µg/ml range depending on antigen abundance, and the included glycerol reduces freeze-thaw stress when small aliquot are prepared. For IHC on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded brain sections, citrate- or Tris-based antigen retrieval is commonly paired with this reagent. Researchers should note the 0.1% sodium azide content, which can interfere with certain live-cell assays and with HRPO conjugate coupling chemistry if not removed by dialysis or buffer exchange before downstream modification.
