The HEXA gene encodes the alpha subunit of the lysosomal hydrolase beta-hexosaminidase A, the enzyme responsible for cleaving N-acetylgalactosamine residues from GM2 gangliosides and related glycolipids. Loss-of-function mutations in HEXA underlie Tay-Sachs disease, a progressive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder characterized by GM2 ganglioside accumulation in the central nervous system.

This rabbit polyclonal antibody from Antibodies.com was raised against HEXA and is supplied as an unconjugated reagent in a 100 µL volume. It is validated for Western blot (WB) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) workflows, and it recognizes the human HEXA protein with confirmed reactivity in mouse and rat samples, supporting studies in patient specimens and standard rodent disease models.

Researchers apply this reagent to probe HEXA expression and subcellular localization, follow enzyme maturation through the ER-to-lysosome trafficking pathway, and characterize residual hexosaminidase A activity in patient-derived fibroblasts or Tay-Sachs model systems. The polyclonal format increases the likelihood of detecting multiple epitopes on both the precursor and mature processed forms of the alpha subunit, which is useful when comparing tissues that show variable proteolytic processing of the enzyme.
