Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) is a class III intermediate filament protein of approximately 50 kDa that is expressed almost exclusively in astrocytes and other glial cell types of the central nervous system. This unconjugated rabbit polyclonal reagent from Antibodies.com is supplied as 100 µl of antibody in a single vial, validated in western blot and immunofluorescence workflows against human and rat samples.

Because GFAP is strongly induced during reactive astrogliosis, this reagent is widely used to label astrocyte populations and to monitor glial responses in models of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, ischemic stroke, and neurodegenerative disease. It is also applied to characterize glioblastoma and astrocyte-derived cell lines, and to track neural stem cell differentiation in vitro.

For western blot, the antibody detects the expected ~50 kDa band from brain tissue lysates and glial cell cultures; for immunofluorescence, it produces robust cytoplasmic staining of astrocytes in fixed brain sections and primary cultures. Store the vial at -20 °C in small aliquots to limit freeze-thaw cycles, and protect from light. For research use only.
