ERCC2, also known as XPD, unwinds damaged DNA duplexes around lesions removed by transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair, and germline variants in the ERCC2 gene are causally linked to xeroderma pigmentosum, Cockayne syndrome, and trichothiodystrophy.
