ELAC2 encodes a zinc-dependent mitochondrial endoribonuclease that performs 3' end processing of precursor tRNAs. Loss-of-function variants in ELAC2 cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency type 17 (COXPD17), a mitochondrial disease, and common ELAC2 missense changes have been studied for their proposed association with hereditary prostate cancer susceptibility.
