The DLX3 homeodomain factor governs epithelial-mesenchymal signaling during craniofacial morphogenesis and is required for proper enamel matrix deposition, osteoblast differentiation, and hair follicle cycling, while loss-of-function mutations underlie amelogenesis imperfecta with taurodontism and tricho-dento-osseous syndrome.
