Because this reaction gates synthesis of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids, the protein is a long-standing marker in adrenal cortex, gonadal, placental, and neurosteroid-producing tissues, and is frequently interrogated in studies of reproductive biology, adrenal disease, and congenital steroidogenic disorders.
