Cox-2 (cyclooxygenase-2, also known as PTGS2) is an inducible enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2, the committed step in prostaglandin biosynthesis. It is rapidly upregulated in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and tumor promoters, making it a central subject in studies of inflammation, pain signaling, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis.
