This rabbit polyclonal antibody targets COL18A1, the gene encoding the alpha-1 chain of type XVIII collagen, a homotrimeric heparan sulfate proteoglycan found in vascular and epithelial basement membranes. The unconjugated IgG reagent is supplied by Antibodies.com as a 100 µl aliquot suitable for western blot detection of the endogenous target in human, mouse, and rat samples.

Type XVIII collagen is best known as the biosynthetic precursor of endostatin, a C-terminal fragment with potent anti-angiogenic activity, and the protein also contributes to the structural integrity of basement membranes underlying retinal pigment epithelium, lens capsule, and other specialized tissues. Mutations in COL18A1 are causally linked to Knobloch syndrome, a recessive ocular and occipital disorder, which has made this collagen a focus of ophthalmology, cancer, and extracellular matrix research.

Investigators studying basement membrane organization, tumor microenvironment and angiogenesis inhibition, proteoglycan processing, or the molecular pathology of Knobloch syndrome and related retinal degenerative conditions benefit from the polyclonal format, which can recognize multiple epitopes along the collagen XVIII triple helix as well as its processed C-terminal fragments.
