CDK5 (cyclin-dependent kinase 5) is an atypical member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family: although it shares the conserved bilobal kinase fold, its activity is driven by binding to the neuron-enriched regulatory subunits p35 and p39 rather than by canonical cyclins, and it functions almost exclusively in post-mitotic cells. The kinase is most abundant in central nervous system tissue, where it directs neuronal migration during corticogenesis, axon and dendrite patterning, synaptic vesicle dynamics, and pain perception. Calpain-mediated cleavage of p35 to a more stable p25 fragment produces a hyperactive complex that hyperphosphorylates tau and other substrates, a pathway that has been linked to the neuronal loss observed in Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and ischemic brain injury.

This unconjugated rabbit polyclonal IgG reagent from Antibodies.com is supplied at 50 µl per vial, raised against CDK5, and validated for western blot and immunohistochemistry. It cross-reacts with human, mouse, and rat orthologs, supporting work that spans patient-derived samples, transgenic mouse models of neurodegeneration, and rat injury paradigms. The antibody is provided as an affinity-purified primary reagent and is best stored aliquoted at -20 °C to preserve activity across multiple freeze-thaw cycles, with working dilutions kept refrigerated for short-term use during IHC and WB sessions.
