CDK5 (Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase that operates outside the canonical cell-cycle CDK family. Rather than binding classical cyclins, CDK5 is activated by the neuronal regulators p35 and p39, and aberrant activation through cleavage of p35 to p25 has been linked to tau hyperphosphorylation and the progression of neurodegenerative tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease.
