CD137 is upregulated on activated CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, natural killer cells, regulatory T cells, dendritic cells, and neutrophils, where engagement by its ligand 4-1BBL triggers TRAF-mediated signaling that activates NF-kB and JNK pathways, driving T cell proliferation, IL-2 and IFN-gamma cytokine secretion, and survival.
