VCAM-1 is a type I transmembrane sialoglycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily, induced on vascular endothelium by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-1, where it engages integrin alpha4beta1 (VLA-4) on circulating leukocytes to drive firm adhesion and transendothelial migration.
